Roger Goldsmith gave up his career as a Planning Engineer in the Oil and Gas industry to write full time. Initially he concentrated on writing film scripts, but he quickly realised how difficult it was to generate interest in full length films, which is what Roger wanted to write, given the nature of the industry and the costs involved. Roger turned to plays.
In 2011 his full length play 'It Started With a Touch' was accepted by Wimbledon Studio Theatre as part of their 'Fresh Ideas' event, where it was staged for a week. Roger then produced the play at Barons Court Theatre where it won the original play of the year award. The play has since been staged in Columbia, USA, and locally in Southsea. His play 'Runaway' was staged by Small But Mighty Theatre in Toronto.
Over the course of five years from 2015 to the start of 2020, prior to the pandemic, Roger produced plays at Rosie's Vineyard in Southsea, two to three productions a year, until the venue changed hands and the opportunity came to a halt. .
Roger has had several productions in London, both individually and in collaboration with Colin Burden and the Bootleg Theatre Company, including, '3 For The Price of 1', 'Torched' later called 'The Allotment' part of 'Deal With It', 'The Squeaky Clean', 'Freehold' and more recently 'Maisie' and 'Messi & Ronaldo.' 'Freehold' was produced by the Barons Court Theatre in 2022.
Roger was the winner of the Lost Theatre 5 Minute Play Festival and the Lost Theatre One-Act play Festival with his plays 'The Tackle' and 'Birth' respectively, the latter which was staged in at Groundlings Theatre in 2023 as part of 'Encompass' a three short plays event in collaboration with Janet Rawson. Roger was also a member of the Royal Court Writers' workshop in 2016.
Roger has also produced a number of short play events, at the Southsea Cinema and Arts Centre, and the Aspex Gallery, using local writers' works. This has proved both popular and successful, i.e. writers seeing their plays performed in front of a live audience sometimes for the very first time. This he plans to continue with.
Roger is part of the Petersfield Fringe in August 2025 where his plays 'Freehold' and 'Montgomery' will be performed, His next production is in London in October 2025 where his play 'Lucifer' will be staged at the Bread and Roses Theatre.
Roger's next production is 'Pigeons' the premiere of the play at the Wedgewood Rooms Portsmouth 2nd 8th and 15th Dec 2025.
